The difference between PP and PE!

2026 01/05

Both PP and PE are saturated hydrocarbons and are similar in many ways, but they differ in some important properties. Except for ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene, PP has a higher melting point and glass transition temperature than PE, but PP requires higher processing temperatures.

1. Different Heat Resistance

PE plastic has excellent low-temperature resistance and can be used normally at -60℃, but its high-temperature resistance is weaker, with a maximum operating temperature of 90℃. PP plastic, on the other hand, has excellent high-temperature resistance, can be used normally at 100℃, and can be heated in a microwave oven.

2. Different Densities

PP has a lower density than PE. PP has a density of only 0.90~0.91 g/cm³, while PE has a density of 0.96~0.940 g/cm³.

3. Different Appearances

PE plastic appears as milky white waxy granules, while PP plastic appears as white translucent granules.

4. Different Hardness

PP is harder than PE plastic; therefore, their applications differ. PE materials are used for films, containers, and daily necessities, while PP plastics are mostly used in home appliances, woven plastics, pipes, medical devices, and the automotive industry.

Similarities: Both are non-polar crystalline polymers with good compatibility. They are non-toxic, chemically stable, and easy to mold and process.
