1. Why ABS Plate is Best for CNC Machining
 
ABS plate is popular in CNC machining due to the unique combination of mechanical and thermal properties that make the cutting process easier. ABS has consistent performance, unlike brittle plastics that crack under pressure and soft materials that gum up your tools.
 
Main Machining Benefits
 
High Impact Resistance: ABS dampens vibration during cutting, reduces tool chatter and reduces the risk of damage to the part.
Low melting point: Abs has a heat deflection temperature of around 80 degrees Celsius, so you can machine it faster without worrying about thermal warping, but good chip evacuation is still important.
Good Dimensional Stability: ABS sheets have to maintain tight tolerances after long machining.
 
ABS machining guidelines recommend optimal chip removal using 2-flute carbide end mills at a spindle speed of 2000-6000 RPM and a feed rate of 0.1-0.5 mm/rev. These settings will prevent over-heating and ensure clean cuts.

2. ABS Types: What Grade is Right for Your Project?
 
The selection of different ABS grades depends on the application requirements. Below is a breakdown of the most common variants, their properties, and ideal use-cases.
 
ABS Standard Sheets
The base grade has balanced impact resistance (notched Izod impact strength 180-220 J/m) and tensile strength (40-45 MPa). It is ideal for prototyping, jigs and housings for consumer products where flame or static resistance is not required.
 
FR ABS Sheet (Flame Retardant) 
This grade is UL94 V-0 rated and self-extinguishes in 10 seconds after the flame is removed. Its heat deflection temperature is 80-100°C which makes it an ideal choice for electronic enclosures and parts for public transportation. Note that the impact resistance of flame retardant additives is a little lower than standard ABS.
 
Antistatic ABS ESD Sheet
This variant is formulated with conductive fillers and gives surface resistivity in the range of 10^6-10^11 Ω/sq. It prevents static buildup and is therefore critical in cleanroom environments when handling sensitive electronic components. The ESD ABS provides static protection, but still allows most of the base material to be machined.
 
PC ABS Sheet (Blend of Polycarbonate)
This blend has the processability of ABS with the toughness of PC and has a higher heat resistance (HDT 100-120°C) and improved impact strength. It is best suited for automotive parts and outdoor equipment where durability is a must. A higher melting point of the blend needs to be machined at a slightly slower speed to avoid the discoloration of the surface.

3. Step by Step CNC Machining Process for ABS
 
High-quality ABS parts rely on proper preparation and execution. For best results, please follow the steps below:
 
Step 1: Material Selection & Preparation
Select the proper ABS grade for your application. AHD also provides detailed material data sheets to assist you in making the right choice. To minimize warping, let the sheet acclimatize to your workshop temperature for 24 hours before machining.
 
Step 2: Tooling up
Use sharp 2-flute carbide end mills for most operations.  For fine detail, use tools with a diameter of 1-3mm and high helix angles to improve chip evacuation. For precision work ensure that your machine is calibrated to ±0.02mm tolerance.
 
Step 3: Parameters for machining
Spindle speed should be set at around 3000 to 4000 RPM for general cuts . For deep cuts or PC ABS blends the spindle speed should be reduced to around 2000 RPM . Use a feed rate of 0.2-0.3 mm/rev to get a good balance of speed and surface finish. Use air or mist cooling to prevent overheating.
 
Step 4: After processing
Machining Deburr edges with fine grit sand paper. ABS parts are easy to paint, glue, or assemble with standard fasteners. If you need a smooth finish, you can use a vapor polishing process.
