Why are engineers shifting from polycarbonate to PSU?
Material choice is critical to product longevity in challenging industrial environments. Polycarbonate (PC) has been the transparent material of choice for many years, however, in high temperature and/or sterilisation applications, PC is often prone to early failure. Enter Polysulfone (PSU) - a high performance thermoplastic sheet which offers superior thermal stability, hydrolytic stability and inherent flame resistance. We are direct manufacturer and supplier from China and we offer precision extruded PSU sheets (thickness 5-80mm) in signature amber transparency with full certification to meet global FDA, ISO and RoHS standards.
Read this guide for all the information you need on PSU sheets including technical specifications and why it’s the logical upgrade from PC for medical and food-grade applications.
What is PSU (Polysulfone)?
PSU Plastic Material (Polysulfone) is an amorphous high-temperature engineering thermoplastic characterized by excellent thermal resistance and mechanical strength. PSU retains structural integrity at continuous service temperatures to 160°C (320°F), and short term exposure to 190°C, unlike conventional plastics.
Our production facility employs the latest extrusion technology to achieve a consistent, stress-free, amber transparent finish. The amber colour is not a fault, but a characteristic of the polymer allowing easy identification whilst still allowing excellent light transmission for inspection windows and fluid level indicators.

Key Properties & Technical Benefits
When buying a psu plate, consumers are interested in certain performance metrics. Here’s how our product is different:
High-Temperature Resistance: Continuous use at 160°C without loss of rigidity.
Hydrolytic Stability: PSU is not subject to degradation by hot water, steam or boiling liquids – unlike many polymers – even after extended exposure.
Transparency: Natural amber color offers visibility into monitoring processes and protects sensitive contents from UV degradation.
Chemical Resistance: Resistant to acids, alkalis and salt solutions. It also resists common cleaning agents used in hospitals and food plants.
Electrical Performance: Great dielectric properties, ideal for high temperature electrical insulators.
Flame Retardancy: Inherently flame resistant (UL 94 V-0) and no additive packages to leach out.
PSU Sheet Applications: When Performance is Key
1. Medical & Healthcare (FDA Compliance)
Medical equipment has to be able to survive many cycles of sterilization. Our FDA compliant PSU sheets are the benchmark for:
Surgical Instrument Trays: Replacing stainless steel for weight reduction with autoclave compatibility.
Sterilization Cases: Clear enough to see instruments without opening case.
Dental Equipment Components: Heat resistant to curing lights and autoclaves.
IV Connectors and Fluid Delivery Systems: Biocompatible, Sterilizable
2. Food Processing & Beverage (Food Grade)
Sanitation is a must. Our food grade PSU plates are widely used in:
Machine Viewing Windows: Viewing production lines during high temp washdowns.
Pump & Valve Components: Hot Juice, Dairy and Brewing Fluids.
Conveyor components: Resistant to lubricants and cleaning agents, moisture absorption.

Material Comparison: Making the Right Choice
Choosing between PSU,and PCdepends entirely on your operating environment. Below is a detailed breakdown to help your procurement team decide.
PSU vs. PC (Polycarbonate): The Critical Upgrade
Many buyers default to Polycarbonate because of its low cost and clarity. However, if your application involves heat or chemicals, PSU is the necessary upgrade.
| Polysulfone PSU | Polycarbonate PC | |
| Max Continuous Temp | 160°C | 115-125°C |
| Steam Sterilization | Excellent (1000+ cycles) | Poor (Stress cracks easily) |
| Hydrolytic Stability | Excellent | Good (Degrades over time) |
| Chemical Resistance | Good | Poor (Attacked by many solvents) |
| Clarity | Amber Transparent | Water Clear |
| Best Use Case | Medical/Steam/Food | General Glazing/Impact |
If you are currently using PC in a medical or food environment and experiencing cracking or yellowing after sterilization, switching to PSU will drastically reduce replacement costs.

Machining & Fabrication Advice
Although PSU machines like aluminum, keep these tips in mind for the best results:
Annealing: Our sheets are pre-stressed, but for complex geometries we recommend annealing finished parts before machining to prevent warping.
Sharp Tools: Use sharp carbide tools. PSU has high melting temperature, dull tools generate too much heat.
Cooling: Use air or a light coolant to remove heat while drilling or milling.
FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
Q1: Is the PSU sheet transparent?
A: The natural PSU has an amber (light honey) transparency. It is clear enough to see through for inspection but blocks UV light better than clear PC.
Q2: Can PSU be sterilized by Gamma radiation?
A: PSU is compatible with Steam (Autoclave) and EtO (Ethylene Oxide) However for repeated gamma sterilization PPSU is usually recommended as it can withstand higher doses.
Q3: What is the MOQ of custom sizes?
A: For common thickness(5-80mm) we have low MOQ. Please contact us directly for custom sizes.
Q4: How does PSU stack up against PEEK?
A: PEEK is more robust and more chemically resistant, but much more expensive (often 4x the cost). For more common chemical immersion applications, PSU provides the best performance to cost ratio.
