In the plastics industry, PAEK stands for Polyaryletherketone, a class of high-performance, semi-crystalline engineering thermoplastic. Its molecular backbone consists of alternating aromatic rings (Ar), ether bonds (-O-), and ketone groups (-CO-). This rigid aromatic structure endows it with excellent comprehensive properties, classifying it as a specialty engineering plastic.

High Temperature Resistance: Long-term operating temperature is typically 200~260℃ (some varieties can withstand above 300℃ for short periods); glass transition temperature (Tg) is approximately 140~160℃; and melting point (Tm) is approximately 340~380℃ (varies by variety).
 
Mechanical Properties: High strength, high modulus, fatigue resistance, and maintains excellent mechanical properties within a certain temperature range (e.g., 200℃).
 
Chemical Corrosion Resistance: Almost insoluble in common organic solvents except for strong oxidizing acids such as concentrated sulfuric acid; resistant to oil and steam.
 
Flame Retardancy and Low Smoke: Self-extinguishing (UL94 V-0 rating), with extremely low smoke emission during combustion.
 
Radiation Resistance and Electrical Properties: Strong resistance to gamma radiation; stable electrical insulation (maintains low dielectric loss even at high frequencies).

Main Varieties
 
PAEK is a general term for a large class of materials. Based on the different arrangements of ether bonds (-O-) and ketone groups (-CO-) in the molecular chain, various specific varieties are derived. Common ones include:
 
PEEK (Polyetheretherketone): The most typical and widely used variety, its molecular chain contains two ether bonds and one ketone group (-O-C6H4-O-C6H4-CO-).
 
PEK (Polyetherketone): Contains one ether bond and one ketone group (-O-C6H4-CO-), with lower crystallinity and slightly better processability.
 
PEKK (Polyetherketoneketone): Contains two ketone groups and one ether bond (-CO-C6H4-CO-C6H4-O-), with a slow crystallization rate; its properties can be controlled by adjusting its structure.
 
PEKEKK (Polyetheretherketoneketone): Contains three ketone groups and two ether bonds, offering superior overall performance but at a higher cost.

Aerospace: Aircraft structural components (e.g., brackets, connectors), engine peripheral components (seals, bearings), lightweight metal alternatives.
 
Medical: Orthopedic implants (interbody fusion devices, bone screws), dental instruments, surgical robot components (good biocompatibility, X-ray permeable).
 
Automotive Industry: Turbocharging system components, sensor housings, high-temperature gears/bearings (metal replacement for weight reduction).
 
Electronics & Electrical: 5G communication high-frequency circuit boards, semiconductor equipment components (resistant to plasma corrosion), high-temperature connectors.
 
Energy & Industry: Oil drilling tools (resistant to high pressure/high temperature), chemical pump and valve seals, nuclear industry radiation-resistant components.
 
Processing & Modification
PAEK is typically processed using thermoplastic processes such as injection molding, extrusion, and compression molding (requires high-temperature equipment; barrel temperature approximately 360~400℃). To optimize performance, carbon fiber (CF), glass fiber (GF), or PTFE can be added for reinforcement/toughening, further improving strength, wear resistance, or reducing the coefficient of friction.
 
In summary, PAEK is a representative of high-performance engineering plastics. With its versatile properties, it has become an irreplaceable key material in high-end manufacturing, playing a crucial role, especially in applications requiring lightweighting, high-temperature resistance, and long service life.
